Under new ownership since December 2024, The Coach House is a beautifully restored boutique hotel in Otterburn, set within the historic Otterburn Hall Estate in Northumberland National Park.
Welcome to The Coach House Northumberland's Best Kept Secret
Originally built in 1870 to serve as the stables for Otterburn Hall — the private estate of Lord James Douglas — The Coach House has been thoughtfully transformed over 150 years into one of Northumberland’s most characterful places to stay. With 14 individually styled en suite bedrooms, a lounge bar and restaurant, two lakes, a waterfall and 500 acres of private woodland to explore, every stay here feels like a genuine escape.
Explore 500 acres of woodland, riverside walks and open parkland right outside your room.
Located in Northumberland’s Dark Sky Park — enjoy incredible stargazing and clear night skies.
Spot red squirrels, deer and birdlife across the estate’s peaceful countryside setting.
Just 30 minutes from Kielder Observatory — perfect for stargazing experiences and night tours.
Stay in a Grade II listed building full of character, charm and original features.
Dog-friendly rooms with direct access to walking trails and open countryside.
14 En Suite Rooms — Each One a Retreat
Every one of our 14 en suite bedrooms has been designed with one thing in mind — giving you proper rest in a proper setting. Rooms sit quietly within the Grade II listed Coach House building, surrounded by 500 acres of private estate rather than car parks or main roads. You’ll wake up to woodland views, birdsong and the kind of stillness that’s genuinely hard to find.
Whether you’re here for a walking holiday, a long weekend break, a wedding nearby at Le Petit Château or Woodhill Hall, or simply a few days away from everything — there’s a room here that fits. Check-in is from 3pm, breakfast is served fresh each morning from 8am, and our bar opens from 6pm for residents and non-residents alike.
Your Base for Everything Northumberland Has to Offer
The Coach House sits at the heart of Otterburn Hall Estate — 500 acres of private grounds that include two lakes, ancient woodland and an open deer park. From here you can walk directly into Northumberland National Park, and within 30 minutes you’ll find Kielder Observatory, England’s largest public observatory.
Hadrian's Wall, Kielder Water and Forest Park, Cragside House and the Northumberland coast are all within an hour's drive of Otterburn Hall Estate. The historic village of Elsdon is 4 miles away, and Otterburn Mill — a working woollen mill and café — is just 1 mile down the road.
Step outside on a clear night from Otterburn Hall Estate and you can see up to 2,000 stars with the naked eye. The Milky Way is visible as a band across the sky on the clearest nights. Kielder Observatory — England's largest public observatory — is 30 minutes away and runs regular public events throughout the year.
Walk directly from Otterburn Hall Estate into Northumberland National Park through the estate's own woodland trails and lakeside paths. The two lakes on the estate make for a peaceful morning walk before breakfast. For longer routes, the Pennine Way and Hadrian's Wall Path are both within easy reach.

Staff were really friendly, great choice of beers including cask ales much to my husbands delight. The food was really tasty and well priced. I had the Wensleydale chicken, i would strongly recommend it. We will definitely be back.Posted on Al HartJune 22, 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Accommodating, charming, friendly place with a high quality finish. Lovely rooms, lovely full English and great staff. Thanks for everythingPosted on Kay ReedJune 15, 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Had a delicious lunch at the Woodman Inn today. The prawn cocktail was the best I have had in a long time. The beef roast had thick slices of tender meat, a large homemade yorkshire pudding, plenty of vegetables and extra meaty gravy. The staff are lovely too. I would definitely recommend giving them a try.Posted on John HerbertJune 10, 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
